Stuck with my old devices
5.17.2007

I think the era of the PDA is just about over. My Palm is so old that it makes me look like a hillbilly! (Sorry, I stole that line from Aqua Teen Hunger Force and I love using it!) Palm still sells a couple of models, but I'm pretty sure that's the end of the line. Everyone wants their PDA software bundled into a phone, so now there are a jillion ugly smartphones to choose from. I think they're all too big and ugly, and I don't want to keep a giant keyboard in my pocket when I just want to make a call every now and then! Besides, I'm a Graffiti master - I even have my current Palm hacked to use the old Graffiti since I've learned it so well! Of course, the iPhone may be the answer for me, but I'm not too psyched about an all-in-one device, no matter how cool it is (that could all change the moment I see one in person, though!). I think what I want is nice PDA functionality in my iPod - so I want an iPhone without the phone! Then again, I hate my phone now, too - it's thick and burning battery life like a big-ass truck burns gasoline. Anyway, I've got to get some new devices sometime this year. I will certainly miss certain applications on the Palm, though - mainly kanji studying and countless hours of solitaire on the potty. I love upgrading my toys, but it's awful when I don't know what to buy next!

Waiting with my Palm

Tonight just as I pulled into my garage after work, I noticed one of my tires was going flat. Since I have a gig to play tonight, I had to get it fixed fast, so I immediately drove to NTB. There was no problem fixing it (stupid nail), but I had to wait over an hour since it was late in the day. Anyway, the purpose of this sob story is that while I was waiting, I got to read tons of stuff on my Palm, thanks to AvantGo! Way back when I first became a Palm addict, I loved having little web sites to read on my Palm, but when I switched back to Apple several years ago, I was sad because AvantGo doesn't support Macs, so I just gave up on it and life went on. Recently I found some free software called MAL Conduit - someone wrote their own AvantGo sync for the Mac, and it works beautifully (and the new AvantGo Palm browser is kick-ass, too)! It was really easy to set up, so now I've always got a full Palm of news stories, movie reviews, and lots of other stuff to keep me occupied. Thank goodness I discovered this before today, since it made waiting for my tire so much easier.

A new Palm

This week I stepped up to my fourth Palm handheld! My Palm is absolutely essential to me - I use it every day of my life, so I figure it's something I need to keep upgrading periodically to a top of the line device (and yes, I'm a devoted Palm user - I just think they are cooler than a Pocket PC). I decided to get a Tungsten T3, since I fell in love with the awesome expandable color screen (it makes my old color Palm look like black and white!). I saved up a bunch of award certificates from my Amazon Visa, then combined that with a special they were running to get it at about half of the list price! This week I've been having a blast loading it up with amazing hi-res photos from my collection, plus trying out some cool games. I've also been experimenting with video - I grabbed a Mickey Mouse cartoon from a DVD and encoded it, and it really looks great!

Desktop and DDR
4.04.2002

I'm having fun using the new Palm Desktop for Max OS X - in fact, I bought a USB cable so now I can sync my Palm to both my iBook and my old, slow PC (using the cradle). I need to keep the PC synced so I can get my AvantGo content, which is the best reading material when you are stuck somewhere (waiting in line at the grocery store, sitting in the Chick-Fil-A drive-thru, and so on). It's fun to be able to download Palm apps using my iBook and sync them right away!

I received my Red Octane Ignition Pad! It's a really amazing dance experience - I passed three Maniac songs on DDR 5th Mix that I had never passed before the first time I tried it out. The arcade layout takes a little getting used to, mainly because it's easy to mis-select things when not dancing, but it's so nice to have a great new pad to continue my addiction.

Speaking of DDR, my music tastes have been leaning heavily to dance lately, and I've discovered the Disco Kandi series! These are super-cool two CD sets of fantastic dance tunes with beautiful, creative packaging - I have sets 2 and 4 so far, and I love them! (My iPod loves them, too.)
