Enjoying iQuiz

Yesterday I decided to try out iQuiz, Apple's newest iPod game available from the iTunes Store for only 99 cents, and it's really fun! It uses all of the information about the songs stored on your iPod to generate a random music quiz that cleverly uses sound clips and album art for a really cool game show experience. It's so much fun answering questions about your own music, but it can be funny since my music taste is so broad (with questions like "Who performed this song - Morning Musume or Beethoven?"). Each game has several rounds of questions and even bonus "lightning rounds" to keep things interesting, and the graphics are cool, too. iQuiz can also play general trivia quizzes, including custom ones you can make yourself. For only a buck, I'm really impressed with the game, and it' a fun way to enjoy all of my music in a new way!Labels: games, ipod

Sneaky iPod output

I'm going to be selling my old iPod photo soon to my pal Josh, which means I'll be including all of the accessories that came with it. The iPod used to come with several things that are sold separately now, such as the iPod AV cable. This cable is about the only thing I still wanted from my old iPod, since it's definitely fun to hook up my new iPod to the TV to watch videos. So, I was just about ready to buy a new cable for myself (since my old cable will go to Josh), when I discovered an amazing fact (by reading customer reviews on Apple's own website)! Apple claims that the iPod AV cable is specially designed for the iPod, but it turns out that what this really means is that they "switched" the outputs just to make it seem that way! Any standard 1/8th inch jack to AV (yellow, red, white) RCA jacks will work - just like the cables that come with every single camcorder and most digital cameras, too. All Apple did was swap the yellow and red signals on the iPod itself! I tried my camcorder cable (plugging red into yellow and vice versa), and it works perfectly, which means I don't need to buy a new cable. This is definitely a sneaky move on Apple's part, and I'm glad I found out about it - having fewer cables to keep track of is definitely better!Labels: ipod, life

My birthday is coming up soon, and Mom & Dad went a little crazy this year on my gift, so now I have a new iPod with video! This is my 4th iPod (not counting my iPod shuffle, which was my birthday gift from my parents last year), and it's definitely the best yet. I decided to get the black model, which is a nice change from white, and the new thin size is totally amazing - it feels so much lighter than my previous iPod photo. I got it yesterday, so I went crazy subscribing to video podcasts on iTunes - I love to watch all the great video available on the web, and now I can watch it curled up on the couch, in bed, on the potty, or anywhere! Last night I had a blast loading it up and watching tons of cool stuff. I also tried out the video-out feature into my TV, and I was really impressed! It looks far better than I was expecting, and now I can show my favorite clips to my friends easily. I'm planning on getting a TuneCenter as soon as they are released (it looks fantastic), and then my iPod will become even more a part of my life then it is already. Right now I'm loading up a bunch of new video to watch later - I love my new iPod!Labels: ipod, life

Yesterday another birthday gift from my parents arrived - an iPod shuffle! The only reason it's a late gift is because it took over four weeks for Apple to ship it because of the great demand, but it was worth the wait. I was pretty amazed when I opened the big shipping box to find a little green CD-sized box under a bunch of packing paper! I knew it was supposed to be the size of a pack of gum, but it's even smaller than I imagined. It was really easy to load it up with about 120 songs from my iTunes library, and the sound is really great. Today I went on a short run at lunch and a long mall walk after work to try it out, wearing it around my neck on the lanyard - it's totally weightless, if you ask me! I'm hoping I'll run more often since it's so fun to listen to!
Last night I went to an Ash Wednesday service to kick off Lent, which means I'll be starting my charity giving again. This year I'm going to do a set amount roughly every other day until Easter, which means twenty donations to twenty charities. It was a nice service - I like the Ash Wednesday liturgy, because it makes me see how precious life is and want to live it well.Labels: ipod, life

I've really been enjoying my iPod Photo! The extended battery life is really great, because I can listen to it all day at work for two days in a row before recharging - my old iPod needed a charge every night, and sometimes I would forget! I think seeing the album art is really cool - I had already been pretty diligent about attaching album art to my songs in iTunes, just because I thought it was neat (and using Clutter makes it easy), but now I get to see them on my iPod, too. Of course, the photo synching is amazing - I have over 10,000 photos on it! I'm using the folder sync method, since I'm not too fond of iPhoto for organization, so I had to flatten my folder hierarchy to one level, but that's OK. I just named each folder something like "2003 Thanksgiving", so I can quickly browse to the right pictures on the iPod. Watching them on my TV with music playing is wonderful! The first night I had it I watched a random slide show for almost two hours and got really nostalgic, and that's what photos are all about for me. I haven't bought a new case yet, but I want to get the iPod Socks when they come out, so I can pick a color to match my mood!Labels: ipod, life

My iPod

It's no secret that I'm an iPod addict. My trusty iPod is usually no more than 10 feet away from me 24 hours a day - I listen to it in the morning, all day at work, and in the evening, too. (Oh, if only I could listen to it in the car without resorting to FM reception, but that's another story.) I'm a fanatic about syncing it with my iBook so that all my MP3s have correct stats, plus it constantly keeps my listening fresh. It keeps me going through every flight when I travel, and I almost wish I had to ride a train or subway daily just so I could listen to it more!
It all started when that amazing commercial aired, featuring the guy bopping around his apartment listening to Take California by the Propellerheads. First, I loved the song, since I was newly crazy about dance music thanks to DDR. Second, I was already an MP3 fan, and I had already enjoyed using an Rio MP3 player in the past (which could hold about 25 songs and took 20 minutes to transfer over serial!), so I was really excited about a new device that could "do it right". Third, I'm an Apple fan from way back, but I hadn't used a Macintosh at home for a few years, so the time seemed right to jump back in. So, that silly commercial hooked me into buying an iPod, plus an iBook so I could finally realize my dream of ripping my entire CD collection and listening to it on this cool device!Labels: ipod, life

Long time, no post. Last weekend I had fun with my pal Dae - we spent some time tooling around the lake, eating way too much food, seeing movies, and just relaxing. One night we were looking through some old photos (I hooked up the iBook to the TV) and listening to random tunes on the iPod. It was totally amazing to me how the iPod kept selecting mellow songs, one after another for about two hours. It was like the iPod wanted us to have a nice, relaxing reminiscing session.

I'll be flying to Washington, DC day after tomorrow, so don't expect any WEBmikey updates this weekend (like that's any different from my regular non-schedule!). It should be a fun trip, so there will be plenty of photos to browse.
I just got a new iPod case today from Japan - it's called the Groove Jacket. This is actually my 4th case, since I just keep buying the next one I see that looks cool. I really like this one, though - it's a design challenge to protect the iPod and still show off the super cool looks, but I think the Groove Jacket does a great job!
I also got a new DDR mix today - DDR Extra Mix. I played for about 45 minutes at lunch today, and just finished a 30 minute session after 11:00 PM tonight! I really like it - it's so much fun to dance to new songs. It also never hurts to have a sexy cartoon nurse on the packaging saying, "I've waited so long time for this moment." This one has a female announcer, too - not nearly as over-the-top as the usual male DDR announcer, but she's pretty fun anyway.Labels: ipod, life

Time for another exciting confession - I went a little crazy buying myself Christmas presents this year. I have always loved portable music, hence my obsession with MP3 players, my minidisc player, and so on. Recently Apple released the iPod, an elegant little MP3 player that holds over 1,000 songs that can be quickly browsed from a cool interface. After I saw the commercials and read some reviews, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I went to a store to look at it in person, and that was it. The only problem was that the iPod is for Macintosh only, so I would need a new computer, too! (I was "raised" on Macintosh, but hadn't used them for around two years.) I read some great reviews of Apple's new iBook (the cool little white one, not the crazy make-up compact), so that's what I decided on. Then I went further and bought a wireless router, so I can surf and read email at cable modem speed from the couch (oh, lazy joy)! So, that's my story - I'm writing this blog entry on my iBook with no wires and loving it. My iPod is in my pocket shuffling through 1,100 tunes, too. Don't worry, I'm still primarily a Windows user, but it feels nice to have a fun little computer again to enjoy in a totally non-work context! Labels: ipod, life
