Back to Minute Maid

On Saturday, my pal Barron and I went to see our yearly baseball game! This year we went back to Minute Maid park in Houston to see the Astros play the Yankees, which was a crazy sold-out event. It was fun to be in the noisy crowd, listening to all the cheering and booing, and even though the Astros lost, it was still a great game, since we got to see so many famous players. Our seats were way up towards the top of the stadium (since this was such a popular game), but the view was still fantastic since you could see the whole field like it was a video game or something. The drive both ways was really nice in Barron's new Prius, too - it was cool to play with the navigation system and watch the incredible MPG readings!

A week ago my pals Ryan and Robert and some other guys at work entered a whiffle-ball home run derby contest, and they were the champions! Their prize was tickets to a Round Rock Express baseball game in a private suite, complete with free food and beer. Robert was nice enough to let me use his extra ticket, so last night I got to enjoy the game with the guys. The Express lost 8-4 to the Albuquerque Isotopes (what a name!), but the whole experience was a blast! The suite had cool leather couches, satellite TV, a huge window wall between home and first base, plus our own regular seats just outside the window (kind of like a balcony). We were served twelve hamburgers and twelve hot dogs for the group, plus a ton of chips, and of course, an entire refrigerator full of cans of beer. In about five hours, the entire group of about 10 people drank over 100 beers (I only had four)! It was a ton of fun hanging out with everyone, enjoying the nice evening weather, and watching the game - thanks, guys!

Yesterday Barron and I drove to Arlington to see the Angels/Rangers baseball game - it was kind of a rainy day, but it was still a blast! It was fun to remember the game we saw in Houston and compare the two - we both liked the park in Arlington better, since it felt more like being outside. We had special passes to get into the Cuervo Club, so we had a beer there and checked out the view that the swanky folks get to enjoy. But speaking of view, we had incredible seats behind third base - we couldn't believe how close we were to the players (you could even hear the umpires)! We had some great baseball food while we enjoyed the game - hot dogs (of course), peanuts, beer, plus bratwurst and fries for Barron and nachos and ice cream for me! The Angels lost (bummer), but I don't mind, because we saw some great plays, including some nice home runs (complete with fireworks). The drive home was kind of intense for me since there was a lot of rain, but Barron and I just chatted our way through it (and even learned some Japanese together). It was a great Sunday, and I slept like a log when I got home!

Yesterday my pal Barron and I went on a short road-trip to Houston see the Los Angeles Dodgers play the Houston Astros! Barron is a big Dodgers fan (being from LA), and I just like hanging out at a baseball game, so we decided to go and see the game. (I have several fun memories of seeing some pro baseball games when I was younger - I saw the San Francisco Giants play at Candlestick Park, and once I saw the Cincinnati Reds play and Johnny Bench hit a grand-slam home run!) The drive to Houston was easy (since Barron did the driving!), and we listened to stuff on my iPod and talked the whole way. Minute Maid Park was incredible - they had the roof closed, so we were in total air-conditioned comfort! Everything about the park was really top-notch, and we had great seats behind first base. We ate hot dogs, peanuts, Cracker Jack, nachos, and Barron also had a BBQ sandwich (plus two giant beers each, of course). The best part of the game was when Barron caught a foul ball! He had his glove with him, and he just stood up, leaned over one row of seats, and it went smack into his glove! (The game was televised and I TiVo-ed it, so when we got home we got to see him on national TV!) Unfortunately, the Dodgers lost, but we had such a great time anyway. Driving home I forced Barron to listen to lots of Disneyland attraction sounds, and now I'm getting psyched for my upcoming Disneyland trip!

Only seven innings

On Saturday I went to a baseball game at the Dell Diamond to see a traveling college game - it was the USC Trojans versus the Rice Owls. I was rooting for USC, just because I always cheer for any team from California, but it turned out to be the worst score I've ever seen! USC lost 12 to 1 - they stopped the game after the 7th inning, because of a rule in college baseball that says if a team is up 10 runs by the 7th, the game is over. I still had a great time, though - it's always fun to hang out at a ball park, drink beer, eat a corn dog, nachos, and ice cream, and chat with pals (I was there with Ryan, Barron, and his son Bay). It was pretty chilly - I was freezing off my patootie while I was eating that ice cream!

A few months ago I wasn't very hopeful for the Anaheim Angels, but suddenly the season is over and the Angels are division champs! Even though I'm only a part-time baseball fan, I'm really excited that "my team" (due to their city being the home of Disneyland, of course!) will be in the playoffs - it's fun to have someone to root for! Go Halos!

Yippee for the Anaheim Angels! I haven't been this excited about baseball in years - I'm so psyched that they beat the Yankees! (I've got nothing against the Yankees, but we're talking about Mickey Mouse here!) I couldn't believe they didn't televise the game on Friday, but at least I watched the play by play on Yahoo. I really hope they make it to the series!

Just when you thought there couldn't be anymore Walt Disney World pictures, check out the Trips page for a link to some photos my traveling partner Jonathan took!
