Making it personal

At bell choir rehearsal tonight, one of the women announced that her Army son just arrived in Kuwait. It suddenly occurred to me how real everything I see on the news is - it just never crosses my mind until something makes it personal. I've never met her son, but now I know someone directly affected by the possible upcoming conflict. I have virtually no political leanings and no thoughts on this war, other than I obviously want America to be safe, though I'm generally against violence of any kind. But now I have someone to think about as things unfold.
At midnight tonight I'm going to smoke my pipe! I've been giving up the "big three" (sweets, booze, and pipe) for the month of January, and since at midnight I will be 36 years old (just my body, not my spirit), I can finally enjoy a smoke!Labels: life
